A little bit about Brahmatal

Where everything is covered in soft white snow.

Brahmatal is one of the most beautiful winter treks in Uttarakhand — loved by beginners and experienced trekkers alike. In winter, the entire path is covered in fresh white snow, the forests become quiet, and the famous Brahmatal Lake freezes completely.

As you climb, you get clear views of Mt Trishul and Mt Nanda Ghunti. On a clear day, you can also spot parts of the Roopkund trail from the top. The best part: the route isn't steep or scary — it's safe, simple and perfect for a first snow trek.

The trail passes through oak and rhododendron forests, open snowfields and quiet sunset points. Campsites are comfortable, paths are well-marked, and the whole experience is peaceful.

Best time to trek

Every month has its own kind of quiet.

Winter (December – March) is what most people come for. Deep snow blankets the trail, both lakes freeze and the mountains look surgical. Trails can be slippery — winter boots and crampons matter.

Autumn (October – November) is dry and clear. Forests turn golden, the sky is sharp, and you get postcard mountain views without the cold.

Spring (April – June) is green and pleasant, no snow but comfortable walking weather.

Monsoon (July – September) we don't run — heavy rains, slippery trails and landslide risk.

Stay, food & permits

What a night on trail actually looks like.

Lohajung stay

A simple guesthouse in the base village — warm blankets, hot water, homemade local food and a proper roof over your head before Day 2.

Alpine tents on trail

Four-season tents built for snow. Warm sleeping bags (–10°C rated), foam mattresses, and separate boys/girls tents by group.

Hot vegetarian meals

Breakfast, lunch, evening snacks (tea/soup/pakoras), and a 2–3 dish dinner. Filtered or boiled drinking water at every camp.

Permits & regulations

Brahmatal requires a Forest Permit — we obtain this in advance. Some villages and forest checkposts may have a nominal entry fee, which we also handle. All you carry is a government photo ID (Aadhar or Passport) for base-village registration.

Group size & ratios

We cap batches at 12 trekkers with a minimum staff ratio of 1:6 — one trek leader, a mountaineering-trained assistant, and porters/cook staff. If a batch under-fills, we may combine with the adjacent weekend batch (with your consent) rather than cancel.

On the trail

Five images from a quiet December.

Safety on the mountain

A gentle trek taken seriously.

Brahmatal is beginner-friendly, but the mountains still deserve care. What we do — and what we ask of you.

What we bring

  • Certified trek leader on every batch, plus mountaineering-trained assistants
  • Oxygen cylinder & pulse oximeter at every camp
  • Full first-aid kit, including altitude medication
  • Crampons and gaiters for winter batches (when trail conditions call for them)
  • Weather updates from the forest department each morning
  • Buffer day plans in case of heavy snow on summit day

What we ask of you

  • Follow the gradual ascent plan — don't rush. Tell your guide if you feel unwell.
  • Drink water through the day. Eat every meal. It keeps energy up.
  • Dress in three layers: thermal, fleece, and outer jacket. Cover head, hands and feet.
  • Stay on the main trail. Snow can hide dangerous drops and holes.
  • Use trekking poles. Wear waterproof boots with grip.
  • Carry a headlamp, personal medicines and a basic first-aid kit. Save your guide's number. Never trek alone.
What trekkers say

Four-and-a-half stars for a reason.

★★★★★

Booked on a Wednesday, on the Kathgodam platform by Friday. The trek lead briefed us properly before Day 1 and the summit morning felt calm even in fresh snow. First real winter trek and I'd go back.

The camps were warmer than I expected. Sleeping bags actually work at –8°C, and the food was hot and unlimited. Zero hidden charges — the invoice matched the website, which is rare.

Went with my parents (55+). The team paced the days to their comfort, kept the group together, and turned back the summit push by 30 minutes because of wind — a call I really respected. Brahmatal Lake in the ice was the trip of the year.

Before you book

Common questions, plain answers.

For snow, go in January or February — that's when the lakes freeze solid and the forests are dressed in white. For clear views and comfortable weather without the extreme cold, April or early May is best.

Yes. Brahmatal is rated Easy to Moderate. Daily distances are 5–7 km, altitude gain is gradual, and the trails are well-marked. If you can walk 6–7 km comfortably and do 20–30 minutes of light cardio for two to three weeks before the trek, you're fit for it.

You can, but we don't recommend attempting it independently in winter. The trail has deep snow, no mobile network beyond Lohajung, and some exposed sections near the summit. Solo trekkers are welcome on our group batches — most of our December–February groups are 60–70% solo travellers.

Airtel and BSNL work in Lohajung. Beyond Bekaltal, expect no signal. We carry satellite communication for emergencies. Tell your family you'll be offline from Day 2 morning to Day 5 evening.

Your trek leader makes the call, and safety comes first. Options include a safer alternate route, a delayed summit push, or using a buffer day. We would rather send you back than send you up in bad conditions.
